Beatriz Mendes
Co-owner · literature & children
Beatriz studied psychology and never lost the habit of reading for pleasure. She cares for fiction, poetry, and the children’s corner, and hosts many of the club evenings.
Who we are
Livraria Calçada has stood on Rua Ferreira Borges since 1976. Today it is cared for by Beatriz Mendes and Nuno Correia — two readers who chose a neighbourhood culture business in their hometown.
Heritage
For nearly five decades the shop has been a generalist independent bookstore: literature, poetry, arts, and children’s books at the centre, with room for the smaller Portuguese and European presses that rarely reach chain tables.
When Beatriz and Nuno took on the next chapter, the task was not reinvention for its own sake — it was to keep the proximity, the curation, and the sense that a bookshop is a cultural room as much as a retail floor.
Trained in psychology and design, raised among books — and still enthusiasts for the book as object.

Nuno Correia
Co-owner · design & stationery
Nuno trained in design and looks after stationery, window displays, and the gallery calendar. Together they wanted a cultural business of proximity in Coimbra — open, local, and still curious.
What we offer
Alongside the shelves you will find our stationery lines, a gallery for rotating exhibitions, workshops, and a monthly reading club. We wait for your visit — until then, write to us.
